Furlandia’s 2013 charity is Portland Animal Welfare Team!

Welcome to the PAW Team

Since 1999, the Portland Animal Welfare Team (PAW Team) provides free vet care
to the pets of people who are homeless or living in extreme poverty. We are the only
service if its kind in the area. We believe that pets are family and every family should be
able to stay together, even if they don’t have a house. Each year we see nearly a thousand
pets and provide them with the medical help, vaccinations, and licensing that allows them
to remain with their people.

What we do

Our regular Wellness Clinics treat between 110 and 150 pets; about 75 volunteers make
this magic happen. Veterinarians, certified vet techs, vet assistants and pharmacists
create a medical team that staffs up to eight vet stations at each clinic. Volunteers handle
patient registration, hand out supplies and work with the clients and their pets at every
stage. At a Wellness Clinic, pets can get medical exams, a full range of vaccinations,
flea and parasite treatments, non-surgical sterilization for male dogs, licensing from three
counties, and supplies including prescription medicine and food, bedding, leashes and
collars and toys.

Between Clinics, our Medical Clinic Director, office staff and volunteers handle
hundreds of calls from new and current clients, manage a spay and neuter program,
provide prescription medicines, and make referrals for vital surgical procedures. We
also provide on-site mini clinics directly in the homeless communities at places such as
Dignity Village, Pot Luck in the Park and Central City Concern.

How you can help

In addition to our Clinics, our office is open five days a week. We need volunteers to
help with IT services, office jobs such as data entry, and clinic preparation tasks ranging
from prepping files and set up to organizing donations for our supply room. Financial
donations help us buy critical vaccines and other medical supplies, fund our telephone
help line, and help us keep the doors of our Clinic open. Donations of old computers,
laptops or pads are our highest priority for our Clinic Update project. We need eight
internet-capable devices, one for each vet station in the clinic, to handle patient records
and medications.
