Volunteer
On-Site Volunteer
Our convention is entirely run by volunteers, so we can always use another pair of paws. For those with only a few spare hours to contribute during the con, stop by the operations office to see how you can help out. Every task is important!
Pre-Event Volunteer (Staff)
Have more time to contribute? Have special skills? Want to be part of a team? We are looking for people with a wide range of experience to help with pre-event planning and coordination. This is still volunteering, but with more responsibility! If you’re interested, please apply using the form below.
Meetings
Most staff meetings are held virtually. Some meetings will be held in person with a virtual component available for those who cannot make it in person.
We will host two meetings are open to the public, so anyone can join. This is a great way to get a feel for what we do behind the scenes! These meetings will take place on November 7th, 2026 and March 20th, 2027. More information about these meetings will be announced on our socials and on this webpage closer to the dates.
Department Task Descriptions
Below are some basic descriptions of the roles for each department. These are the tasks you made be asked to perform, but are not necessarily expected to perform everything listed. If you do not feel comfortable performing a task, please inform your department lead. If you are not sure what a task entails, this may help you decide what departments you are interested in.
Door Monitoring
If you have never volunteered at a convention before, this is the best place to start. This role involves checking for badges, sometimes verifying the membership level, at key points around the convention. This role also involves providing general guidance to attendees on where functions are located. This is a sitting-down position.
Crowd Management
This position primarily involves helping maintain lines of crowds, ensuring walkways are not blocked, and advancing ADA attendees to the priority lines. This is a mobile position and typically involves using a loud voice to direct attendees.
ADA Assistance
The name of this role is very generalized and encompasses a number of various ADA-related roles (though it does not mean you have to cover them all). This includes assisting mobility impaired attendees navigate the venue, provide verbal directions/descriptions/instructions to vision impaired attendees, assisting hearing impaired attendees procure ASL interpreters, and more.
Logistics/Setup/Teardown
This is a fairly easy position for physically able volunteers. Setup and teardown of the convention. Helping with loading the truck at the storage unit, help with distribution of items around the convention and set up, help with collection of all convention items to be loaded on to the truck, and helping to unload the truck back into the storage unit. This has the ability to earn 1.5 times the hours for assisting at the convention for total hours worked.
Registration
A moderate difficulty, but entirely sitting-down position. Work quickly to get attendees their badges by verifying their ID against their registration, process payments for any due balance, and resolve issues with registrations as needed. Fast-paced, systematic, detailed work. Requires money handling skills.
Dealer's Den/Artist's Alley Monitoring
Check in on our vendors in the Dealer's Den and Artist's Alley and provide support as needed. May require quick navigation through packed crowds.
Con Store
Operate the con store to sell Furlandia's merchandise to attendees (and sometimes, the general public). This is equivalent to operating a vendor booth, requires money handling skills.
Fursuit Lounge Assistance
You will be watching over the fursuit lounge (AKA the headless lounge), maintaining the cleanliness of the space, ensuring there are sufficient supplies for fursuiters to take a break, maintaining the lounge rules, as well as provide support to fursuiters as needed.
Hospitality
Our convention offers a hospitality suite for volunteers who need a place to take a break and get a quick snack. This role is for operating the hospitality suite. You will be responsible for watching over the suite, as well as providing food and drinks to our volunteers as needed. It is recommended, but not required, to have a food handler's card.
Panel Support
This role involves assisting the panelists during the event to ensure their panel is operating nominally. This includes basic tech troubleshooting (such as connecting a computer to the projector and internet) and providing silent time reminders to ensure the panelist finishes on time.
Information Technology
The backbone of the convention's infrastructure. Configure servers, network switches and Linux Mint laptops on site, troubleshoot issues as they arise, and ensure all technology is operating nominally.
Theater Tech (A/V)
This is primarily focused on the setup and teardown of A/V equipment. You will work with our A/V vendor to setup and take down the stage, including rigging and hooking up the lights and speakers, and anything else the A/V crew requests.
Marketing and Promotion
Pre-event role only. This team handles the development of advertising and promotional material, including outreach to local stores and restaurants and other conventions.
Artwork/Graphic Design
Pre-event role only. You will be drawing artwork for the convention to use for signage and promotion.
Theming
At the convention, this is your time to shine! You will be responsible for designing and placing props and decorating the venue to match the convention's theme to the extent the venue allows.
Volunteer Coordination
The backbone of our volunteer workforce. Pre-convention, assist volunteers by coordinating shift schedules, provide training material as needed and address common questions volunteers may have. During the convention, clock volunteers in and out, signing out radios as needed, provide staff handbooks and hand out rewards for completion of hours. This is a sitting role.
Website Development
The title is self explanatory. You will be responsible for maintaining the website and updating it as needed, both before and during the convention.
