Some people enjoy being a part of the show, rather than just watching it. Fortunately, we are always looking for people to help with the behind the scenes action. If you are able to put in around 5-10 hours of on-site work, we will even comp your membership. Furlandia Episode 8 runs from Thursday May 21 to Sunday May 24th, 2020. Volunteers have pre-event assignments and a required orientation on or around Thursday, May 21st.

If you are accepted into the program, you are expected to be on-site to check in for your shift at least 10 minutes before it starts. Plan accordingly so you have no job, school, or other conflicts during any time you are scheduled.

To Apply:

Simply follow the instructions at the bottom of this page and submit your application.

Applications submitted after the positions are filled will be offered the opportunity to be put on the wait list.

Applications will be accepted up until 11:59 pm (Pacific Time, UTC-8) on April 25th for the wait list.

The date of the application does not affect the chances of being accepted, just whether it is considered directly for a volunteer position or the waiting list.

FAQ

What are the benefits of being a volunteer at Furlandia?

  • Admission to the convention for use when not on-duty
  • Snacks and refreshments to keep you hydrated and ready to go
  • A Furlandia t-shirt to wear throughout the event identifying you as a volunteer

What kind of work does the job involve?

About 5-10 hours of challenging and important tasks like:

  • Pre-event training
  • Guarding doors and scanning badges
  • Monitoring event programming/events and assisting panelists
  • Checking badges during meals and other special events
  • Stuffing event bags
  • Answering con-goer questions
  • Various miscellaneous tasks

What costs should volunteers plan for?

  • Travel expenses to and from the event
  • Hotel or housing expenses
  • Food expenses beyond beverages and snacks (You'll need to provide your own meals for the duration of the con)

What restrictions do I have at Furlandia compared to an attendee?

Usually none. You have the same badge and access the attendees have. However, your work shifts must come first so you get to use attendee badge as an attendee when off-duty.

What if I have particular events/activities I want to attend?

Volunteers will submit work preferences that are factored into their schedules. That plus the ability to trade work shifts with other Volunteers should allow you to definitely attend at least a few preferred events.

Do you take groups?

No. Each person in your group is welcome to submit their own application. We will consider each one on an individual basis.

What are my chances on the waiting list?

We can't answer that on an individual basis. In general the odds are fair to moderate that you'll get an opportunity to volunteer if you get placed on the waiting list. We also do not share our criteria for filling openings from the waiting list.

What about the rest of my questions?

We get a lot of applications. We provide the information that volunteers need to everyone who is accepted. If you have a question that you need answering now, prior to applying, please email us and we will be happy to help. Otherwise, please wait to see if you get accepted and if all the information you receive then answers your questions.
